Former PDP aspirants defect to Labour Party in Cross River

The Labour Party (LP) is reaping from the crisis tearing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State apart.
No fewer than five aspirants for different positions are new members who defected from the main opposition party to the Labour Party which is now considered as the emerging third force in next year’s general elections.
This became evident at a recent town hall meeting in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, for stakeholders and supporters of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
The event was organised to sensitise supporters and members of the party about the aspiration of its presidential flag bearer.
A member of the House of Representatives elected on the platform of the PDP, Danial Asuquo, has emerged as the LP flag bearer for the Cross River South senatorial district.
Asuquo who represents Akamkpa Biase Federal Constituency at the National Assembly came third at the recent PDP governorship primary.
Dominic Aqua-Edem is another aggrieved former PDP chieftain, who recently joined the LP. Aqua-Edem, who lost the PDP ticket for the Akpabuyo, Bakassi and Calabar South Federal Constituency seat has also emerged as the flag bearer of the LP for the same constituency seat.
Asuquo said the two major political parties in the country, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the PDP have taken Nigerians for granted for too long. He blamed the two parties for the current woes bedevilling the country.
He said: “The Labour Party is ready to lead a political revolution in Nigeria.”
“We are ready to lead that revolution in Cross River State to win all elections,” he added. In LP, we don’t buy people’s conscience with money. We are a party of father, mother and children. We go to the grassroots to speak to the consciences of the people and win them over. That’s what we have started from street to street, ward to ward…”
As someone who has been in the National Assembly for more than two tenures, Asuquo said he has a formidable structure and visible constituency projects in Biase and Akamkpa Federal Constituency that would help him to win next year’s election.
