Naira protests: Tinubu, El-rufai have perfected coup against Buhari — Omokri

Former aide to ex-president Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately take action against the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Bola Tinubu and governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, for plotting coup against his administration.
Omokri’s call is coming following the unrest in Lagos State and some part of Southwest region of Nigeria over the naira and fuel scarcity.
The former aide in a post on his official Facebook page, argued that there are more bank branches in Lagos state than the entire Northwest combined, but no riots have been recorded in the Northwest.
He wondered why the Southwest region which has been operating a cashless economy suddenly become the spot where the protests against the Naira redesign are highest, adding that the riots are not about the Naira but the election.
Omokri however, said that what Tinubu and El-Rufai have done is a coup d’é·tat, and if president Buhari does not take action against them, the duo could threaten next week’s election.
He said, “Please fact check this: There are more bank branches in Lagos state alone, than there are in the entire Northwest combined. Yet, we are not seeing new Naira riots in the Northwest. We are not seeing ATMs being burnt up North. No POS operator has been attacked.
“The entire Southwest is almost cashless. Yet, that is where the protests against the Naira redesign are highest. The entire North is a cash based economy.
“Yet, that is where there are no protests. These riots are not about the Naira. This is about the election. It is about Tinubu! And that is why he has asked ‘friendly’ Governors to disobey constituted authority and accept the invalidated notes.
“What Tinubu and El-Rufai have done is a coup d’é·tat, and if General Buhari does not act against them, they can threaten next week’s election, which may be their plan all along.”
Recall that the Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-rufai, yesterday faulted the position of president Muhammadu Buhari over the old Naira notes.
Buhari during his broadcast had announced that the N500 and N1000 old notes have ceased to be a legal tender.
He also directed Nigerians in possession of the money to visit any Central Bank of Nigeria branch to deposit the it. But governor El-rufai defied the directives of the president, insisting that the old Naira notes will remain a legal tender in his State.
