10th NASS: Anger in Tinubu’s camp over Akpabio’s desperation to become senate president
3 min readThere is growing anger among the political followers of president-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the desperation of a former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio to become the president of the 10th Senate.
Sources close to the president-elect say Mr. Tinubu is beginning to get irritated by Akpabio’s desperate moves “especially his antics of visiting Tinubu’s home too many times”.
Yesterday, the All Progressives Congress (APC), denied reports in sections of the media claiming the ruling party has zoned the 10th NASS leadership positions to a particular geo-political zone of the country.
Some forces in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are pushing to microzone the senate presidency of the incoming 10th National Assembly to a geopolitical zone of the country, a move the President-elect, Bola Tinubu had vehemently rejected.
Reacting to the development, The APC National Publicity Secretary, Barrister Felix Morka, in a statement denied the reports insisting that the ruling party is yet to zone the leadership positions of the 10th National Assembly.
Morka noted that such reports being circulated on social media did not emanate from the party.
He said, “The attention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been drawn to versions of zoning arrangements for the 10th National Assembly leadership positions in circulation in sections of social media. The information did not emanate from the Party and should be disregarded.”
“To be clear, the Party has yet to zone positions of leadership of the 10th National Assembly. Any decisions made in that regard will be duly communicated via the Party’s official information channels.”
A loyalist of the president-elect who preferred not to be named accused Akpabio of being behind the reports and desperately trying to impose himself on Tinubu to be made the Senate President.
The source said the President-elect and those around him are increasingly becoming embarrassed by Akpabio’s desperation to destabilise Tinubu and his plans for Nigerians including the National Assembly.
“The cabal is not happy with Godswill Akpabio and the way he is going about his ambition to become the Senate President. He never allows the president-elect to rest. He wants to come around every minute—and we are sincerely tired of his antics.
“Akpabio is too corrupt, desperate and unstable. Remember how he betrayed his party when he was the minority leader? He can do anything and we are not comfortable with him. His impunity days at the Niger Delta Ministry is being investigated by the EFCC. He just woke up and told people he is the next Senate President; is that how things are done? He is becoming too irritating to the President-elect and those around him. We want TInubu to succeed and the foundation will be to carry every region along and form a unity government. Tinubu wants the 10th Senate to be led by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu. Both former Governors have come a long way and for a peaceful government, South East can never be taken for granted,” the source said.
